In Japanese culture, they are believed to ward off evil spirits. For this reason, you'll find these imposing trees near temples.

They also represent strength, resistance and rebirth... a symbolism that became even more rooted after the atomic bomb explosion in Hiroshima in 1945 when only six Ginkgo Biloba trees survived.

Tokyo has chosen the Ginkgo leaf as the symbol of the city, which, thanks also to its particular shape, often resembles a heart!
